“RAISE A GLASS TO THE MAN WHO RAISED YOU WELL”

In this special edition of the weekly Bourboneur Blog we’re covering the recent Four Rose’s Father’s Day release which hit the secondary market with a bang this week.  Although it’s fairly typical to see Four Rose’s drop special releases from time to time, this particular release caught special attention given the age and proof of the bourbons being offered.  In this post we provide the most in depth review on the web for this release and some thoughts on when and if it might be the right time to shell out the cash to add this to your collection.

Release Details

Two weeks prior to Father’s Day, Four Roses hosted a special event where they released the first in a series of barrel proof bottles that made use of their OESV recipe and were aged for 16 years.  Of note, one of the barrels yielded the highest proof release of a single barrel to-date from Four Roses, clocking in at 138.2 poof.  Following the event, Four Roses further released bottles at both their Lawrenceburg Distillery as well as at the Cox’s Creek Bottling Facility.  The remaining releases all clock in, in the 130+ proof range, making these quite the lineup.

High Proof, So What?

Well, first off high proof isn’t exactly what this lineup is known for.  When you think of bourbon aging in a rickhouse, you probably immediately think of multi-floor buildings where you may have warmer conditions up top driving greater evaporation resulting in some higher proof barrels.  For Four Roses, that’s not the case – they are one of the only big distillers that utilize single-story rack warehouses and for many of the barrels therein, finding their way to the proof points in this release is a stretch.  Typically, when a barrel reaches this high of a proof those barrels yield is depressed, meaning the angels share is far greater given the evaporation driving to higher proof points and thus these bottlings represent short barrels that further drives the “rarity” of these bottles.

The overall release consists of fifteen different bottlings as noted below.

Secondary Market Valuation

Just about the time you put down a number it's going to change, but as of writing below you’ll see the current valuations based on the Bourbon Blue Book™ for the 2024 Four Roses Father’s Day release.  Unsurprisingly, the most sought-after of the mix are the higher proof offerings, commanding at present near a thousand bucks.  The Bourbon Blue Book™ is updated on average once a week, or more, and is your best bet in keeping tabs on what’s happening with prices moving forward.

Bourboneur’s Thoughts

For certain the OESV recipe is a favorite amongst the lineup from Four Roses, and the extra proof likely makes this a bold variation that most likely really draws out the juxtaposition of oak and berry that you would normally expect.  I’m just guessing, as dropping this kind of coin on this kind of bottle really doesn’t seem of interest atm.  For sure these types of special releases are just that, special, in so far as they don’t occur with regularity.  However, as with all things in the bourbon world, hype does wear off and prices do drop…I’d suggest holding tight for the time being and letting the newfound hysteria wear off.  I expect prices will cool, but hard to say how much.  You can be certain that we’ll have the best gauge of pricing on the Bourbon Blue Book™ as we work to do our part in helping to make the world whiskey wise!
