First thing is first, it’s OK to like cheap, low-cost bourbon. It wasn’t terribly long ago that a bottle of “Two Stars” bourbon won out in a blind tasting among a crowd of folks in my garage bar, a brand which many had never tried, and few had even ever heard of. It beat out several bigger name brands that have a lot more gravitas to them. But it won. At about twenty bucks it usually resides too low on the shelf to be seen, I guess. In a world of hype driven bourbon hysteria, it is often too easy to be seduced by very expensive bottles of bourbon with some being good, and others, not so much. Certainly, over the years I have now amassed a small fortune in bourbon at this point – that said, my “collection” differs from many as it gets drank and shared and not displayed and ogled at…actually, there’s still ogling but my ogling is accompanied by sipping. Whereas a lot of our posts focus on what’s new and hot and jumping on the secondary bourbon market, this post strikes a slightly different balance. Today we highlight four cheap bourbons that you are bound to enjoy, all for a reasonable price.
This is one cheap bottle that delivers more bourbony goodness than so many other much more expensive bottles sitting on my shelves at home. If you've got a twenty-dollar bill, grab it along with some change from your couch and buy one of these. From the start, nosing this to the finish it really provides a great all-around experience. There are five other bottles in the Benchmark lineup, all equally as cheap...if you're curious about the rest and have four minutes, we've done the legwork for you and have All Benchmark Bourbon's Ranked.
I wasn’t going to mention this above and then not include it in the lineup. Again, having beat out a number of bigger name bottles in a recent tasting at my garage bar speakeasy, it’s worth having this on the radar at the very least. Maybe it’s already on the radar or in your cabinet at home.
Buffalo Trace is the flagship bourbon of Buffalo Trace Distillery and is my go-to bourbon for making a really great Old Fashioned. Check out our post on Making THE Best Old Fashioned and get insights on our homemade Orange Bitters to really up your game. At just a smidge over twenty dollars it's one of the cheapest and best pours for the money that you'll have, period.
This is an easy breezy bourbon right here. For the value shopping Bourboneurs in the room, this is your jam. It delivers a very traditional bourbon flavor profile that has a buttery and even-keeled consistency that will certainly score some points with many. The price point, around thirty bucks, and the value it brings is what's most mind blowing about this bourbon, and one to add to your shelf if you've not already!
With a flood of different distillers crowding the shelves with bourbon being en vogue, there are plenty of choices to make and it can be more difficult than ever to hone in on a bourbon you might like.
