2024 1st Quarter Secondary Bourbon Review | What’s Hot

All day long, every day, people are flipping bottles on the secondary bourbon market.  It doesn’t seem to matter the time of day, there always seems to be someone looking to sell a bottle and someone looking to buy a bottle.  Out of the thousands of bottles that trade hands on the regular however there are a few notable stand outs that have been trending up the past number of months.  These bottles seem to either disappear as quickly as they appear or are simply trending up due to whatever reason, be that hype or quality.  Below we discuss some notable stand outs in review of the last three months of culling the sales data from thousands of bottles which we provide FREE to you all vis-à-vis the Bourbon Blue Book™ and Bourboneur’s expert eye on market trends.

Headwinds in the Secondary World

Before launching into what’s hot on the market right now it’s probably worth discussing the backdrop of what’s happening in the secondary markets as we believe it underscores the noteworthiness of the bottles we discuss here.  As we wrote this past week, following creation of the Bourboneur Secondary Bourbon Market Index, in the first two months of the year we saw a softening of pricing overall with a drop of approximately six percent in valuations since the start of the year.  There are several reasons for that which we discuss in last week’s post, but with the premise that prices across the board are pulling back it is unique to see that these bottles have all increased in valuation during the current ebb in secondary market pricing.

What’s Hot in Secondary Bourbon Markets

The bottles below have all been on the move north in pricing, seemingly shaking off the market doldrums and gaining a head of steam.

Blanton’s Gold

Probably one of the more modest winners in the mix, Blanton’s Gold has been on a slow but steady climb over the past three months, with a bottle now costing you ten dollars more than it did at the start of the year.  Anecdotally, I also seem to see more general posts on this bottling and some of the “tater love” that regular ol’ Blanton’s gets seems to be spreading to the rest of the lineup!

Jack Daniels Coy Hill Hazmat’s

While the overall market fell away a little over six percent in the first quarter of 2024, hazmat Jack Daniels Coy Hill bottles gained six percent, with the most recent sale fetching just over eight hundred dollars.  You’ll be paying fifty dollars more today than when the year started to add this to your collection.  Of course, you can settle for a bottle that falls below the 140-proof required to be a hazmat bottle and pay considerably less…to the tune of a hundred thirty bucks less!  If you’re a fan of that kind of heat, make sure to check out the Top 10 High Proof Bourbons of 2024.

Elijah Craig C923

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Batch C923

So, that guy in the Ascot got it right with this one, it’s tasty and still on the hype train, although pricing hasn’t necessarily gone up significantly since the start of the year the demand for this bottle has remained incredibly strong.  If I had a dollar for every “ISO” post I’ve seen for this bottle, I’d probably be able to afford the price tag which is creeping toward the one hundred seventy-dollar range based on the last couple sales.  The trend seems to be to pair these C923’s with some other miserable bottle that you don’t want as a package deal so if you’re in the market, it pays to use the Bourbon Blue Book™ to make sure you’re not getting taken.

13th Colony Double Oaked

13th Colony Double Oaked Bourbon

Secondary posts for the coveted double oaked bourbon from 13th Colony continue to trend north, with pricing increasing nearly twenty percent since the start of the year.  You better have a quick-fire “BIN” (buy it now!) ready to go if you’re keen to get hands on this bottle as they disappear just as fast as they appear most days.  As of writing, this bourbon is currently trading hands for just over seven hundred dollars.
